President-elect Donald Trump is picking tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and biotech executive Vivek Ramaswamy to lead a new Department of Government Efficiency following his presidential victory, according to a new statement shared by Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson for Trump’s transition team.
DOGE’s primary goal is to identify and eliminate inefficiencies in federal spending, which amounts to over $6.5 trillion annually. The new department seeks to dismantle bureaucracy, cut wasteful spending, and restructure federal agencies to make them more effective.
Musk previously suggested creating an efficiency commission to address government overspending, which he claims fuels inflation. The CEO of Tesla unveiled the establishment of DOGE during his first campaign swing for Trump across Pennsylvania in October. He also outlined plans to save $2 trillion in tax spending through the new department.
Musk will lead a comprehensive financial and performance audit of federal government operations based on his technical and business expertise. Meanwhile, Ramaswamy, who has advised Trump’s campaign, would join the initiative to downsize federal operations. He advocates for what he calls a “band of small-government revolutionaries” to reduce the federal government’s scope.
